Eat The Cheese

“Eat the cheese”, she said. This may be the very best advice I have ever received from a therapist.

We were discussing some recent life events, that I wasn’t sure how to navigate through, and she suggested that I stop focusing on the situation, and put the focus back on me. “How serendipitous! Because I just started a 90 day self care plan.” (Now if you actually think I say words like “how serendipitous” to my therapist, either we have never met or you don’t know me nearly as well as you thought. But I did mention the plan. And explained what the first couple of weeks look like. 90 minutes of being outdoors everyday, yoga, journaling, meditation, and making some changes to my diet. I told her that during the school year (Sept – June), I tend to eat at odd hours – dinner often happens after 9pm, and it’s often a cheese sandwich. And that I would like to use these next few months, to establish an earlier meal time, prepare meals ahead, and make healthier choices, and stop eating cheese. We talked about looking at healthier cheese options. I am not sure there is such a thing as a healthier cheese option. But we did decide that cheese is self care, and should not be messed with. We agreed that perhaps eating less obscene amounts of cheese may be a good idea. We didn’t discuss what obscene amounts of cheese looks like. So while I concentrate on putting myself first, and making healthier options for myself, know that cheese once again has a role in making me feel good.

My name is Laura. This blog will serve as documentation on a 90 day (and perhaps longer) commitment to new self-care practices. If you find yourself here, you will join me in daily walks by the water, and occasional forest or tree lined street, new to me healthy recipes, some lessons discovered during therapy sessions, reading a few books, watching a few movies, and finding some fun. This journey into self-care will revolve around my core values of curiosity, creativity, inclusion, accountability, and harmony.

Welcome.
