One of the things that I started doing after I finished this self care project was to start writing fiction. Sometimes that consisted of one page of what I call word doodles. Kind of an automatic writing exercise on whatever topic crawled into my brain that day. Sometimes it was just a scene. Or I would try to elaborate on a dream. But I also started a WIP that won’t let go of me. I haven’t gotten too far into it. But its grabbed hold of me and I wont be able to close it up, until I have told the whole story. How long is the whole story? Good question! I have no idea. I don’t even know what form it will take, though I am going to keep writing it until I don’t have anything left to say.
Back in March, I submitted my pitch, and a sample chapter to an artist’s residency located near Turku, Finland and was accepted for a fall residency. I am very much looking forward to going and learn all I can about Finland, its people, culture, food, language, nature, and living in the real north (note that I did not call it the True North- because I already live in Canada).
Anyway, I am a jumbled up mix of excitement about going and an unhealthy dose of extreme imposter syndrome – to be living amongst artists and filmmakers and musicians, all of whose works look to be extraordinary. And I am hoping that my little fairytale (if my characters would even allow me to call it that – as there are actually no fairies in my story), will be accepted and maybe even appreciated, dare I say even liked.
The countdown has begun. In less than 2 months I will be spending one third of the autumn in Finland. I am currently making a list of the must see and do things and events. Since I will be bypassing Helsinki on this trip and exploring Turku and its surrounding archipelago regions, if you have some ideas, please share them with me.
As soon as I arrive in Turku, after I check into my hotel, I am going to go straight to the Sibeliusmuseum, the Art Gallery, and grab some lunch to eat in the park.
Now your turn – what should I do next?
