34 sleeps until I go to Finland. Holy is time moving fast right now. I have about 76 to do lists on the go, and I am making excellent progress in all of them, with the exception of writing. Writing a book is the entire reason I am going to Finland for a big portion of the fall, and I am unable to write. I can make up little stories in my head, I just cant seem to write them down. So this week I am going to buy myself a journal, and start writing by hand. I think the problem with getting the words down is my medium. Writing by hand is organic – I can just let the words flow through my pen. Typing on my laptop -with my fingers doing some weird disjointed nonsensical dance just makes me feel disconnected from my imagination. I already bought the cute Moomin collab energel pens from Pentel. So I may as well get some use out of them. I was kind of hoping they would have already started working their magic – but I haven’t taken them out of the package. Perhaps if I take them out and hold them, they will inspire me to write.

What I have been able to do though is give myself every reason to procrastinate. Wash the dishes, sweep up, reorganize my pantry, learn new recipes for when I go away, knock off to do list items, write a blog post. And it’s got to stop. My therapist suggested that I look into body doubling – working with another to keep myself accountable. And so I am going to consider this action. Perhaps it will be as easy as taking my laptop to the coffee bar down the street for a few hours. Or rather my pens and journals. And get lost in my words, the white noise of the cafe, and my favourite hot beverage (and for those who are not new around here – its not actually tea – its a cortado).

My name is Laura. This blog will serve as documentation on a 90 day (and perhaps longer) commitment to new self-care practices. If you find yourself here, you will join me in daily walks by the water, and occasional forest or tree lined street, new to me healthy recipes, some lessons discovered during therapy sessions, reading a few books, watching a few movies, and finding some fun. This journey into self-care will revolve around my core values of curiosity, creativity, inclusion, accountability, and harmony.

Welcome.
